Essien Hutton Andrew-Essien has been sworn in to the inner bar as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria in a ceremony presided over by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahamad Tanko. The Atiamkpat-Iman born legal luminary was admitted into the prestigious silk ranks of the legal profession in recognition of his stridesĀ  and accomplishments in legal practice.

Essien Andrew, SAN was one of the 38 successful applicants for this year’s admission to the inner bar. A total of 117 applications were screened for the ranks this year, out of which 36 practicing attorneys and 2 academics were selected. The new senior lawyers were recommended by the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee on July 4 for confirmation as senior advocates. They underwent an induction seminar into the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN) on Thursday, 19 September 2019 before their final swearing in at the supreme court during the opening of the legal year.

The ceremony at the Supreme Court was attended by dignitaries from all walks of life as well as family and friends of the new Senior Advocates. The attendees were addressed by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahammad Tanko, the Attorney General of the federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN, and the President of NBA, Paul Usoro, SAN among others. A reception was held after the supreme court event at Stonehedge Hotels with Supreme Court Justices and other judiciary officers in attendance. Representatives of Nigerian Bar Association, Calabar Branch as well as other branches came out to celebrate with Barrister Essien Andrew.

The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel who was represented at the occasion by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Barr. Uwemedimo Nwoko, commended the new SAN for his achievement and applauded his brilliance as a professional in legal practice. The Governor also thanked God for making it possible for the first ever lawyer from Onna Local Goverment to attend that height during his time in office as the governor. Governor Emmanuel said that Essien has risen above limitations to set a model for others to follow.

Also Speaking at the occasion the Senior Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters, Senator Ita Ennang called on lawyers in Uyo NBA branch and other branches of NBA in Akwa Ibom State to take up the challenge of breaking the jinx of joining the inner bar. Ennang lamented that there has been no Akwa Ibom based practicing lawyer who has been admitted into the ranks of SAN.

Essien Andrew, SAN is the 11th Akwa Ibom citizen to be sworn into to the Senior Advocate of Nigeria Ranks. He was the only candidate from any of the South-South NBA Branches to be admitted to the ranks this year. The SAN ranks was instituted in 1976 to replace the Queens Counsel cadre that was administered by the English Bar. Over the years 548 lawyers representing 0.005% of the entire professionals called to bar in Nigeria have attended the SAN ranks.
