Some University of Uyo female students were Monday morning (29/07/2019) subjected to horrific experience of violent robbery by some men suspected to be members of a campus secret cult group.
The group of suspected cult boys stormed the hall 6 hostel, a female students’ residence in township campus, by 6 am face covered with mask, welding machetes, clubs and other dangerous weapons.
TNV gathered that they broke and entered through the room of the hall representative. After beating her severely and collecting her mobile phones, they proceed to attack of her roommates and also dispossessed them of valuables including mobile electronics, money, and jewelries.
One of the female students who spoke to TNV on condition that she remain anonymous, claimed that a female resident who tried re-enforce the locks and bar the cultists from entering the residence hall was beaten and severely wounded. She also claimed that some of the girls who who tried to hide their phone and valuables during the raid were not so lucky as the attackers spent time to upturn boxes and mattresses in search of phones and other items to rob.
While the robbery incident lasted every cry for help was not heed as the campus security and Nigeria Police were no where to be found. It is also not clear were the wardens who would have sent out distress calls to the university security were during the raid. The girls who were victims of the attack were taken to the university’s medical center for treatment.
A student who reside at the township campus hostel posted a picture of bedding stained with blood from the scene with the comment “No where is safe in Uniuyo anymore”.
The University of Uyo Chief Security officer could not be reached for comment on the incident. A security officer who pleaded anonymity admitted that his unit is well aware of the incident and are working with the police to track down the perpetrators and bring them to book.
