Chris Oyakhilome of Christ Embassy is of the opinion that churches who are yet to reopen for service after government’s approval to resume public worship are led by “unbelievers” who have denounced the faith. The founder of Believers Love World International who is not a stranger to controversy had earlier made several conspiracy theory about the Coronavirus pandemic.
Following public concerns religious centers were closed in March as a part of measures to contain the spread of Coronavirus. After due consideration the federal and state governments have given religious organizations the go-ahead to reopen for worship. However, the approval came with conditions such a mandatory social distancing, wearing of masks, and hand washing and other sanitary protocols.
Some churches are yet to resume following the approval to reopen among them are Household of God Church led by Chris Okotie, Pastor Tunde Bakare led Latter Rain Assembly Lagos; Pastor Sam Adeyemi led Daystar Christian Centre Lagos; Covenant Christian Centre Lagos, Pastored by Poju Oyemade and Pastor Paul Adefarasin’s House on the Rock, Lagos. The popular Redeemed Christian Church of God also kept its camp grounds closed holding a virtual convention in early August. The RCCG leadership are also not making any arrangements for their monthly camp activities in September.
In his mid-week service sermon at his church on Wednesday, August 19, Oyakhilome accused the pastors whose church are yet to reopen for regular service activities as having denied the faith and as such no longer believers.
“If you refuse to open church for fear of being infected, you were never a believer. This is a great concern because there were churches that were thought to be churches until recently.
We find a lot of ministers who were thought to be advocates of the gospel advocating for shutting down the churches because they cannot guarantee safety.
It is pressure like this that reveals what is a church and what is not. Do they really believe in God, the same God of the patriarchs in the Bible?
When you get to that point where you are afraid of opening churches for fear of being infected, you have denied the faith. You never believed”
Oyakhilome said. None of the pastors he berated have offered any response yet.
