About ten people were feared dead and several others wounded recently in Onna when men suspected to be members of opposing cult groups stormed several villages killing, maiming and injuring innocent people.
The villages on the cultist hit list include Awa – Iman, Ikot Obong Ishiet, Atiamkpat, Ikot Obio Eket, Ikot Etekpo, Afaha Ubium and Edem Idim Ishiet all in the greater Awa area of Onna Local Government Of Akwa Ibom State.
Though the cause of the clash was not immediately known, business activities in the area were disrupted as market places were deserted and shops closed for three days during the said cult rampage.
Our correspondent in the area reports that one of the cult groups alleged to be on a revenged mission macheted to death a brother of one of their opponents whom they had targeted. The deceased who was said to have gone to the mother’s residence to make arrangements for the burial of his grandmother met his untimely death when his brother escaped. His mother was said to be badly injured during the incidence.
Among those allegedly killed during the cultist operation were one Ubong from Atiamkpat, Awee from Ikot Etekpo, Edidiong
Henshaw from Ikot Obong, while one Uko, the brother Ubong from Atiamkpat escaped.
Efforts to reach the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) and the Chairman of the Local Government on the matter proved abortive.
